Genuine conversations while networking

Genuine conversations while networking

Curiosity is key

Networking events at work can make us feel awkward, phony and exploitative, especially if we see it as a transactional interaction with a goal for instrumental advancement.

Networking does not need to be brown-nosing and inauthentic.

Here are some ways in which you can create genuine and authentic interactions at networking events:

  1. Reframe networking as building authentic connections for the collective gain: Beyond your own professional gains, networking can provide collective benefits. Remind yourself before an event that you are out to find connections that can benefit your division, team and colleagues. That you are there to find collaborators and future partners to give life to your ideas.
  2. Look at conversations, not as a promotion platform but as learning opportunities: When you meet a new person you learn from their backgrounds, ideas and experiences. Remind yourself that you are at the event to learn and that every conversation is one opportunity to do the same. Be curious and search for information about the needs and challenges that others are facing and seek their inputs and expertise on your own challenges.
  3. It is not about quantity but quality: Remind yourself that the goal is not to pass your card to the maximum number of people possible. But, to create 1-2 authentic connections. If you focus on 1-2 people at every event, over time you will build a wide and strong network of close ties. Rather than a wide and weak network of acquaintance ties.If you don’t enjoy the conversation and are not present to listen and be curious – the others will sense it and it will hurt the connection building – the reason you are there.
